The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2026 was not an easy stretch. The conducting body, which is the National Testing Agency (NTA), recorded 15,68,867 registrations out of which 11,64,098 candidates actually sat for the entrance exam. CUET was conducted across 37 test papers, 19 days, and 35 shifts. After the entrance exam, admissions were conducted across 240 universities, keeping in mind their respective eligibility and counselling processes.
However, a downside of the entrance exam was noticed rather quickly. A high score in one subject did not automatically transition into a seat. Several ranks were lost before the first question appeared on the form, in the subject list, or in the week after the scorecard. 1. CUET Eligibility Criteria Form Guarantees Admission
This error was the costliest mistake of the cycle. The CUET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin allowed candidates to choose up to five subjects, including languages and the General Aptitude Test, irrespective of the subjects they had opted for in Class XII. That sentence is about the entrance test, not about admission. Delhi University and several other central universities still require the CUET papers to correspond to subjects actually studied in Class 12. A strong CUET score in a subject paper you never took during the Class XII Boards level means a rejected candidature in many files.

Open the program page of every target university before you lock five papers. Map course → compulsory CUET subjects → what you studied in Class 12. If those three lines do not meet, that course is not on your list.
2. Choosing CUET Subject Combination Mindlessly
CUET permits students to choose five subjects at the max; this does not mean that they are required to. In 2026, the pool was 13 languages + 23 domain subjects + 1 General Aptitude Test. The most common mistake aspirants make before selecting their CUET subject combination is stacking them mindlessly, taking the entrance exam, achieving a rewarding score, and then arriving at counselling with a combination that is not used by any listed program. Others skip a language or the General Aptitude Test required for candidates to get admission to one of their shortlisted institutes.

Work backwards from three realistic programs, not from ten dream colleges. If all three programs require an English subject along with two domain subjects, then this is the subject combination you need to gain admission to one of your desired institutes. Following this, remember that a fourth paper is insurance, and the fifth is basically a backup from your Plan B.

3. Do Not Confuse Lookalike Subjects
On the CUET UG 2026 list, several papers carry a slash in the name: Mathematics / Applied Mathematics, Computer Science / Information Practices, Economics / Business Economics, and Biology / Biological Science / Biotechnology / Biochemistry. Students read those slashes as “pick either, they are the same thing.” They are not treated that way at admission.
NTA is testing one paper under that code. The university is still checking which subject you actually studied in Class 12 and which paper that programme’s bulletin names. Delhi University, for instance, has kept Class 12 subject correspondence mandatory. A student who took Applied Mathematics at school may be eligible for some programmes and blocked from others that insist on Mathematics. The same split appears between Computer Science and Information Practices for B.Sc. Computer Science, and between Economics and Business Economics for Economics (Hons). Biology’s bundled title is one test paper, but life-science and professional programmes still read your Class 12 subject, not the slash on the NTA list.
That mismatch does not flash an error on exam day. You can attempt the paper, score well, and still be filtered out when CSAS or another university portal matches your CUET subjects against the course eligibility table.

Do not choose a paper from its informal name. Open the program bulletin, note the exact Class 12 subject required and the exact CUET paper mapped to it, then match both to your marksheet. If those three do not line up, that honours course is not an option, no matter what the scorecard shows later.
4. Treating CUET and Class XII Boards The Same Way
The official CUET UG 2026 bulletin stated that the difficulty level of the entrance exam is equivalent to the Class 12 syllabus. This line misleads a large batch of aspirants. They finish the textbook the way they finish a board chapter, notes, definitions, one long answer, and walk into a paper that does not ask exactly what you prepared for.
Each CUET paper in 2026 was a 60-minute computer test of 50 compulsory MCQs, with a marking scheme uniform at +5 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. Since the aspirants did not prepare beforehand, they did not have time to reconstruct a new preparation plan. You did not reach your full potential because you were not trained to write detailed answers and instead focused on quickly recognizing the correct option.

Use NCERT as the syllabus, but cramming them up is not the right strategy. When a chapter is completed, turn it into timed MCQs the same week. If you cannot answer a clean set of 8–10 questions from that chapter in about 12 minutes, with accuracy high enough to survive −1, the chapter is not CUET-ready for you. Further, treat the language paper with the same seriousness as a domain paper; it is not an add-on.
5. More Attempts Mean a Higher Score
CUET UG does not reward courage. In every paper, the marking is fixed at +5 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. Unanswered questions do not carry any gain or loss. All 50 questions were compulsory in that they appeared on the screen, but not in that you had to click an option.
The student who “attempted everything” often left the centre feeling satisfied, but the student who left eight cold questions blank and used the saved minutes on questions already half-solved often scored higher. The scorecard records net marks, not bravery.

In every mock, make two sections titled "Attempts" and "Accuracy." If accuracy falls once you start guessing, those extra clicks are costing you. Give a question about 40 seconds. If you still are not sure about the answer, mark it for review and move on to the next one. Revisit the question when and only if time remains. A blank is a zero, but a wrong answer is a minus, therefore, it is important to treat them as different outcomes.
6. Ignoring NTA does not give you a college
NTA’s job of getting you admission into a UG course ends after releasing the CUET scorecard. They are not responsible for allotting a college seat.
Admissions are conducted by and through the participating universities. There is no common counselling portal, no single choice-filling window, and no automatic transfer of your NTA score into a university file. Two mistakes followed. Some students kept refreshing the NTA website for a counselling link, and missed university registration windows. Others downloaded the scorecard, assumed the process was automatic, and expected a call if their score was eligible. However, it is important to note that until you register on your target university’s portal, upload documents, pay its fee, and receive an acknowledgement, you have a score that needs to be converted into an application.

On result day, open a checklist for every university you will actually join. For each one, note the portal, the last date, the documents, and the fee. Register immediately. The NTA scorecard is only a document. The university form is the application that can turn that score into a seat.
7. Little Details Amount to Huge Gaps
A share of 2026 candidates never reached a merit list because the application itself was either incomplete or had something that couldn’t pass the criteria.
The name on the CUET form did not match Class 10 and Aadhaar "Rahul Sharma” in one, and “Sharma Rahul” in another. The photograph was cropped, dark or filtered, and the upload failed the size or background rule. A category or PwBD certificate was in the wrong format, or expired. None of this shows up as a low score. It shows up as a form that universities cannot verify or as an application that the NTA never treated as submitted.

On day one, copy the name, date of birth and spellings from the Class 10 marksheet and Aadhaar, not from memory. Check the photo and signature against the official size and format before you upload. After payment, wait for the confirmation page and save it the same evening. Use the correction window only for the fields it actually lists. If a field is locked, get it fixed through the official helpdesk while the correction window is open, not after the admit cards are out.
8. Ignoring Backup Completely
The most aspired Delhi University programmes sit in a very thin score band. A few marks, or one subject combination, separate a seat at a North Campus honours course from no seat at all. Students who typed only “SRCC / Hindu / Miranda" or "nothing" and left BHU, Allahabad, Hyderabad, AMU, state universities and other CUET-accepting campuses off the list, treated those names as if they were a strategy. They were a filter. When the first-choice cut-off closed, there was no second line for the same score to fall into. Preference filling is not paperwork after the exam. It is the last paper of the exam.

Write two lists before counselling opens. List A: programmes you want. List B: programmes you would actually attend. Rank every option on List B, not just the three names on List A. A second-choice seat accepted on time is an admission. A first-choice seat watched from outside the portal is only a story. Always keep a backup list ready.
9. Stopping at the First Merit List
A 2026 score that missed Round 1 at a North Campus college was not always a closed file. DU CSAS, BHU and several other CUET universities ran later rounds and spot lists through July–September. Students who treated the first list as the final list logged out, did not freeze or upgrade, and watched a similar score pick up a seat two weeks later. Counselling is a sequence of lists, not a single announcement.

On result day, note every round date for each portal you have joined, not just Round 1. Check the list until that university closes admissions. Withdraw only when you have a seat you will actually join, or when the portal itself has shut.
To conclude, CUET UG 2027’s information bulletin is expected only in January 2027. Until then, the 2026 rules are the working model; five papers, NCERT-level domain tests, university-wise counselling, normalised scores. Do not wait for the bulletin to decide your subject map. Do not wait for the result to open university sites. The 2026 cycle punished three habits in particular: choosing papers for a course you were never eligible for, treating CUET like a second board exam, and assuming NTA’s job included a seat. Fix those three and most of the “rank I deserved” conversations disappear.
